FINDING CLARITY, CREATIVIT Y AND FOCUS

I previously mentioned that I wrote my business plan after a drum circle. It was my first-ever drum circle so I did not know fully what to expect. The session did not disappoint and, as the reverberations swirled around the room and permeated into my cells, it was as if I was being sonically shaken into action.

The drums were like axes chopping down everything that was camouflaging my vision. My mind was full of ideas and I could see what I wanted to achieve and how I was going to get it. When I “came round”, I stayed silent and quietly grabbed my notebook. I poured all my thoughts into it before I had a chance to forget anything.

When we are stressed and anxious, survival becomes our main goal, our top priority, and there is no room for creativity or clarity. The body thinks it is in the middle of a fight, that it is in danger. You can’t create from that place of being; you need to experience stillness for clarity to come. Stillness is an invitation for your thoughts to organize themselves.

The more you get caught up in that fight-or-flight state and let the daily humdrum of life take over, the easier it is to lose focus. That focus could be related to your work, goals, what you want to manifest or simply what your true desires are for the type of life you want to lead.

Your judgement can become cloudy and you become unsure of yourself, the uncertainty hammering home any self-limiting beliefs you have – the “I don’t know how” quickly becoming “I can’t do it”, before turning into “I’ll never be able to do it”. This is when you may begin to lose yourself.

Look back at any times in your life when you were anxious – this may be right now. Notice how everything merged into one. Is it hard to remember what life was like before you were gripped by these feelings?

Therapeutic sound is a brilliant way to cut through the noise and shed everything that is holding you back, and this is all to do with being in a theta brainwave state. Theta brainwaves are slower than the relaxed alpha waves and come just before deep sleep hits. In essence, they straddle the tiny space between consciousness and unconsciousness and are the brainwaves of light sleep and dreaming.

Being in a theta-dominant brainwave state enables you to access your creativity. This is also essential for information processing, which means that when you are in a theta-dominant state, your brain has time to organize your thoughts. It is also the place of deep mental rest.

You also naturally experience this state and the corresponding bursts of creativity that can come with it. Have you ever had a brilliant idea just before you fell asleep? This is the same. When you are in a sound bath, you can maintain being in this state for longer periods than usual, therefore amplifying the benefits. Shamanic drumming produces the same frequencies as theta waves (3–8Hz).
